Business headed for a catastrophe?

Many businesses in the US are headed for a catastrophe. It all comes down to information security. Business owners do not take it seriously. That's right they don't, if they did we would not see the number of security breaches increasing instead of decreasing.

Right now there are some legislative requirements to force them to protect information, but if it is not enforced, it does no good. It simply reinforces the callous disregard many business owners have when it comes to information security.

Okay maybe it is not a "callous disregard", maybe you just don't think it will happen to you. Well over 30 businesses in the year 2008 alone have figured it wouldn't happen to them, but it did. So what if it happens to your business?

Well lets see if I can shed some light on things. First of all, when your customer hands you a credit card, it contains sensitive information that makes it possible for them to fall victim to identity theft. When your employee handed you an application same thing, sensitive information. But what you must realize is that they are giving you more than a credit card or employment application they are giving you their trust.

They are saying, "This information will make me an identity theft victim if it falls into the wrong hands. I am trusting you to protect it. If you lose it and I fall victim, my life will be turned into a living hell. When you take it into your possession, you are accepting the responsibility to take the steps necessary to protect it."
And here you thought you were just taking payment or looking for a worker.

Now when you have a security breach, you have broken that trust, period. Your customers will know that you have broken that trust as soon as the breach becomes public. And if you try to hide it it's even worse. Now think about that for a minute. Would you want to do business with someone that loses your personal information.

It's time to understand the very important responsibility that is on your shoulders. You can get an information security consultation for free. You will learn about the Federal laws that affect your business(I didn't mention that fact), what to do to protect information and how to implement a program to help you with the information security issue all at no cost to you. You can also see how you can help your employees with a voluntary benefit to protect them from the effects of identity theft and legal issues.
