Cybercrimes can get you arrested
Identity theft often leads to other crimes. If someone has your personal information they can do anything with it. There are many cases of people's personal information being used to set up phishing sites or bogus auction companies. Pedophiles have even gotten accounts on sites like MySpace to look for victims Now you are facing criminal charges for something you did not do. It's not hard for your information to fall into the wrongs hands. It doesn't even need to be hacked. The average person can get all the information they need to steal your identity by simply running your name through a search engine. A stolen or lost wallet with your driver's license inside can be enough to steal your identity. Businesses suffer security breaches regularly and most of those breaches originate internally. Some companies have gone as far as throwing paper files in dumpsters by the box load. ID thieves then use that information to set up a site to capture information on others (phishing). Join E-Bay and sell non-existent products or buy from others using stolen credit card numbers or phony money orders. They can order and sell pornography using your information through illegal "kiddie porn" sites. Worst of all they solicit underage or other victims on social sites using your information. When the authorities investigate these crimes, the trail leads straight to you, not the thief. You are the one who gets arrested and tried for the crimes. Conviction and jail time could be in your future even though you did nothing wrong. Even if you don't get convicted you are facing major damage to your reputation and a devastating financial crisis due to attorneys fees, court costs and other expenses necessary to defend yourself. |
