Goal setting for business

One of the things the marketing "gurus" have been pushing recently is the idea of not setting goals. Goals are probably one of the most important parts of doing business. If you don't have a goal, what are you working for? Most of these gurus will tell you goals are impossible to reach or that they are a guarantee of failure. The truth is most of them have set goals but did not design a game plan to help them reach that goal. So here is a little wisdom on goals.

1. Goals are not "set in stone", you goals may change to something else or become less important than other goals. This is normal.

2. Determine your long range goal, Most successful corporations have a Mission statement and a 10 year game plan to support that statement.

3. Understand that your long range goal is only reached by breaking it down. Have a yearly goal, monthly goal, weekly goal and daily goals. Each of these goals should represent progress towards your long range goal.

4. Make your goals attainable, each goal you reach is another step toward that long range goal. All too often we set unreasonable goals for ourselves.

5. Once you have determined your goals, create a game plan to reach them. What is the activity needed. Break in down to your daily goal.

6. Follow your game plan consistently.

To give you an idea of how that works, You want 1000 customers in 10 years(long range goal)
Your yearly goal is to add 100 customers each year
That is 8.3 customers per month 2.1 each week based on a 4 week month
If you must contact 10 people to get one new customer that means you must talk to 20 people each week. 4 people per day. (5 day work week)

Now you know exactly how many people you need to contact on a daily basis. Make it your daily goal to talk to at least 4 people per day.

Consistently talk to your 4 people, if you work a 5 day work week, you will have spoken to 1040 people over the space of a year, which more than satisfies your goal. This is a very basic model but you get the idea.
